COMPARE BY WORKFLOW

Electrical estimating platforms for commercial bids

The systems below are specialist electrical estimating or takeoff solutions. Generic field-service software is not a replacement for drawing quantities, labor assemblies and addendum control. This list is a research shortlist, not a paid ranking.

DISTINCTIVE COMMERCIAL WORKFLOWS

What to test in an electrical estimating demo

Drawing versions and addenda

Import a 30-sheet electrical package, then replace two sheets with addendum A1. Can the estimator identify which takeoff quantities were counted against which revision?

Pass condition: retain the original estimate, record what changed and produce a reviewable delta before updating the bid.

Assembly completeness

Count 40 duplex receptacles and test whether the electrical assemblies cover boxes, plates, raceway assumptions and terminations. Confirm that one missing accessory can be corrected globally without changing unrelated assemblies.

Pass condition: transparent labor and material components, not an unexplained lump-sum rate.

Labor and local factors

Run the same branch-circuit estimate for normal access and an occupied building with restricted hours. Ask how adjusted labor factors are recorded and reviewed.

Pass condition: an auditable factor applied to the intended work items rather than a hidden override.

Supplier updates

Quote material prices from two suppliers on different dates. Ask whether a later price import can update selected lines without silently overwriting the original bid basis.

Pass condition: supplier, effective date and price-change impact can be inspected.

Bid qualifications

Create an alternate for lighting controls and exclude utility fees. Check whether the scope narrative and financial summary remain consistent when the alternate is selected.

Pass condition: inclusions, exclusions and alternates stay attached to the exported proposal.

Estimator handoff

Have a second estimator review a saved bid, locate the source of a quantity and explain a labor assumption. Test roles, concurrent editing and the export format on the edition being quoted.

Pass condition: another estimator can reproduce the pricing logic without consulting the original author.

THE COMMERCIAL ESTIMATING PROCESS

From drawing set to controlled bid: six checkpoints

StageRequired evidenceFailure to avoid
1. Drawing intakeDrawing register, revision date, addenda and scope exclusionsEstimating an obsolete sheet
2. Quantity takeoffTraceable counts by sheet, area and systemDouble-counted or missing equipment
3. AssembliesLabor units, materials and accessories included with a deviceCounting fixtures but omitting supports and terminations
4. PricingSupplier quotes with date, freight and allowance assumptionsUsing outdated materials pricing
5. Bid reviewLabor burden, contingency, exclusions and named reviewerConfusing markup with gross margin
6. AddendumDelta quantities, scope impact and a new bid revisionOverwriting the original estimate

This is a vendor-demo checklist, not a claim that every shortlisted product supports every checkpoint.

REPRODUCIBLE DEMO TEST

One addendum test for every vendor

Start with a fictional commercial fit-out containing 300 devices across three floors. After the initial count, introduce an addendum replacing 20 fixtures and moving 12 outlet locations. Keep scope, quantities and supplier assumptions the same across demos.

  1. Takeoff: show the sheet revision and identify all affected quantities.
  2. Delta report: produce added, removed and unchanged item counts without redoing all three floors.
  3. Labor: demonstrate how deleted or revised assemblies change labor hours and cost.
  4. Bid control: compare the original and revised total, qualifications and audit history.

Score each platform using the same metrics

  • Minutes to incorporate the addendum, measured by your own team.
  • Number of untraceable or manually re-entered quantities.
  • Clarity of the revised scope, exclusions and exported bid.
  • Total first-year cost, including takeoff modules, data subscriptions and onboarding.

SHORTLIST

Three specialist platforms to evaluate

Use your own workload and verify product scope in the vendor documentation. A feature named on the marketing site may be limited by plan, region, integration or implementation.

Trimble Accubid ClassicElectrical takeoff

Material and assembly estimating with graphical takeoff via LiveCount.

Conest IntelliBidElectrical takeoff

Electrical estimating with material databases, labor units and related takeoff workflows.

Confirm with vendor: Check edition-specific limits, supplier data licenses and drawing-revision handling.

Trimble Accubid AnywhereElectrical takeoff

Cloud-based electrical and industrial mechanical estimating.

Confirm with vendor: Demonstrate concurrent estimator work, takeoff control and revision audit.

BUYER CHECKLIST

Questions to ask before signing

  1. Is graphical takeoff native, integrated, or a separately licensed application?
  2. Which electrical item libraries, assemblies and labor-unit systems are included in our quoted edition?
  3. How are takeoff revisions, addenda and alternate bid versions tracked?
  4. Can estimators compare supplier quotes while retaining price source and date?
  5. Can two estimators work on the same estimate without overwriting changes?
  6. Which exports can project managers use for procurement, buyout and job-cost codes?
  7. What is the complete first-year cost for our estimator seats, databases, support, training and migrations?

Ask for answers in the written quote. A vendor's live demonstration may use modules not included in the offered edition.

FAQ

Commercial estimating questions

What is the difference between electrical takeoff and estimating?

Takeoff measures quantities from drawings. Estimating adds assemblies, labor, materials, subcontractors, overhead and bid allowances. A system may do one task well and still need another tool for the complete bid.

Can Jobber or Housecall Pro replace specialist electrical takeoff?

They serve field-service quoting and operational workflows. Do not assume they provide commercial electrical drawing quantities, labor assemblies or addendum comparisons; request a live demonstration if those capabilities are essential.

Which product is cheapest?

There is no defensible universal answer without current seat counts, optional modules, databases and implementation quotes. Compare the same scope of work and ask for total first-year cost in writing.

What should we test first?

Import a real, non-confidential plan set and revise it. If the tool cannot show quantity deltas, traceable labor assumptions and exportable bid versions, the estimation handoff needs further evaluation.
